Manchester Institute of Biotechnology

Centres

The MIB is home to a number of research Centres that specialise in specific areas of biotechnology. Their work contributes to our vision of a more sustainable future, as well as driving forward innovation within the field.

Each centre has a dedicated team of researchers and technical staff who dedicate time and resources to furthering our knowledge and expertise in that area. Below is a list of our Centres with a short description. If you would like to find out more about any of them, most have a dedicated website where you can get in touch.

Centre of Excellence in Biopharmaceuticals (COEBP)

Working closely with key players in the biomanufacturing industry, the COEBP brings together expertise in discovery / protein expression, bioprocessing / chemical engineering and formulation / delivery that mirrors the commercial pipeline for biological therapeutics and advanced therapy medicinal products.

For more information, please visit the COEBP website >>

Centre of Excellence for Biocatalysis, Biotransformations and Biocatalytic Manufacture (CoEBio3)

The CoEBio3 is the UK’s new organisation designed to provide a world-class scientific environment in which the necessary research and development can be carried out to create new biocatalyst-based processes to meet the changing needs of industry in the next 10-20 years.

For more information, please visit the CoEBio3 website >>

The Future Biomanufacturing Research Hub (Future BRH)

Future BRH is an EPSRC / BBSRC funded biomanufacturing accelerator that is coordinating UK academic, HVM catapult and industrial capabilities to enable the complete biomanufacturing innovation pipeline. By harnessing the power of biology through innovative industrial biotechnology and UK strengths in biomanufacturing the Hub aims to: drive efficient, sustainable and innovative bio-based manufacturing in key sectors (pharmaceuticals; value-added chemicals; engineering materials; and advanced biofuels); and deliver economic, robust and scalable bioprocesses that meet societal and commercial demand.

Manchester Centre for Biophysics and Catalysis (MCBC)

MCBC is a state-of-the-art cross disciplinary platform technology centre integrating biophysical, structural, and computational methods to address contemporary problems in catalysis and the dynamical properties of biological macromolecules. By going beyond simple structure determination of biological molecules MCBC is driving the new ‘dynamics determines function’ paradigm through temporal analysis of dynamic transitions relevant to biological function and catalysis from the femtosecond to second timescale.

Manchester Synthetic Biology Research Centre for fine and speciality chemicals (SYNBIOCHEM)

SYNBIOCHEM is a BioFoundry for the biosynthesis and sustainable production of fine and speciality chemicals, able to tackle and multiplex grand challenge projects. By harnessing predictive synthetic biology protocols, the Centre is driving next-generation sustainable biomanufacturing processes for scale-up across industrial sectors (e.g. pharmaceuticals, green chemistry, novel materials and bioremediation).

Michael Barber Centre for Collaborative Mass Spectrometry (MBCMS)

This flagship research facility is an internationally recognised centre of excellence in the use and development of mass spectrometry. The Centre possesses 26 mass spectrometry platforms capable of making accurate mass measurements on synthetic molecules, metabolites, carbohydrates lipids, proteins, as well as on intact protein assemblies. The MBCCMS has strong alignment with other MIB Centres, and national / international academic and industrial partnerships. Four strategic research areas are underpinned by data driven analytics, computational methods and chemometrics: Multi-omics LC-MS/MS setups; Protein conformation and dynamics; Technique and instrument development; and Analysis of volatiles.
