Our research
Research at the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology spans several disciplines and brings together researchers from across the University to address today’s grand challenges.
Our strong interdisciplinary focus allows our scientists and engineers to push the boundaries of biotechnology research and open avenues for collaboration with industry and policymakers.
What is biotechnology?
Biotechnology is a field of biology that involves manipulating living organisms and bioprocesses for human benefit. Biotechnology brings together traditionally discrete disciplines such as engineering, technology, and medicine into one interdisciplinary field.
We use advanced quantitative methods to explore the relationship between the macro behaviour of biological systems and the properties of their nanoscale components to develop new biotechnologies that are used in areas such as human health, energy, food security, industrial transformations and the environment.
