An electricity pylon against a blue sky

Food, energy and environment

With the world’s population growing, we are increasingly placing higher demand on our energy and food supply networks, as well as generating more waste which contributes to environmental problems. Our research is tackling these problems by developing solutions that are sustainable, scalable, and economically viable.

We explore how we can improve the health of food crops to increase yield and durability in a range of environments. We investigate the agrichemicals, such as fertiliser and pesticides used to maintain crops, and use biotechnology to engineer cleaner and greener alternatives.

Our researchers are also heavily involved in finding news ways of powering society through bioenergy derived from biomass, photovoltaic cells, and more efficient fuel cells. Explore all of this and more through our areas of expertise.
